A number of the articles in our quarterly newsletter, Floodplain Management Today, have focused on special projects or topics that are of interest to floodplain administrators and the broader floodplain management community. In this article, we outline analysis done by a special project at NeDNR to better answer the question "who lives in Nebraska floodplains?" We found some surprising and interesting results. Knowing more about who lives in your floodplains can help reduce the loss of life and property from flooding and help keep your citizens safer.

Comprehensive Plans and Flooding

In 2014, NeDNR reviewed dozens of comprehensive development plans from communities across the state to better understand how well flood risk is addressed in the plans. We found through our analysis that there is a lot of room for improvement in Nebraska comprehensive plans. This article outlines the findings and provides a link to our resource guide for any community updating or drafting a new comprehensive plan.

Ice Jam Partnership on the Lower Platte River

This article highlights a 20-year partnership among communities, counties, NRDs, and state and federal agencies to reduce the risk and threat of ice jams on the Lower Platte River. The partnership addresses a risk present during every winter/spring season and has been successful in reducing losses and keeping people informed about ice jams.

Cass County Flood Risk Project

Cass County Flood Risk Project

The Nebraska Silver Jackets team, a partnership among state and federal agencies, worked with communities in Cass County to survey homes and provide flood risk information. The culmination of the project was a very successful public meeting that introduced many floodplain residents to floodplain management and flood insurance. The article outlines the entire project and can be an example to other communities looking to do something similar.

Highwater Mark Campaign

Another successful Nebraska Silver Jackets project was identifying opportune locations to place highwater mark signs that include historic flood information. This campaign was meant to raise awareness of the true risk of flooding and bring a sense of familiarity to the risk so that communities have a strong basis for floodplain management.

Flood Mitigation Project in DeWitt

Flood Mitigation Project in DeWitt

This article outlines a successful flood mitigation project in DeWitt that installed flapgates on Highway 103 to reduce flooding from Turkey Creek. Just months after they were installed, the flapgates were tested by high water and worked incredibly well. After this article was written, in the May 2015 flooding, these flapgates again worked to reduce flooding in DeWitt.
